Don E. Beyer wrote a very basic, 64-page introduction to Aboriginal cultures, The Totem Pole Indians of the Northwest (Franklin Watts, 1989), with illustrations, archival photos and simple text for an area from Washington state to the Alaska panhandle. He makes the (unproven) claim that "The earliest known visit of a white man to the land of the totem pole makers was in the year 1592. Captain Juan de Fuca, a Greek explorer sailing for the Spanish government, planted the flag of Spain at Port Angeles, Washington.
