Born in Belleville, Ontario in 1950, Michael Carmichael of Vancouver Island was a carpenter who published a collection of poems, Oyster Wine (Island Press, 1974; Oolichan Books, 1978). With Ken Leduc, he contracted to build his first house in 1974. They worked in the Nanaimo area until about 1983. The Capilano Review, Number 43, 1987, contains an article on Carmichael, as well as some of his art and writing. He spent some early childhood years in Belgium. His parents died in his late teens, whereupon he bought an "Around the World" airline ticket.
