David Bergen was born in Port Edward, British Columbia in 1957. His novels include A Year of Lesser, a New York Times Notable Book and winner of the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award; See the Child; The Case of Lena S., winner of the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, and a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Fiction; and The Time in Between, which won the 2005 Scotiabank Giller Prize, The McNally Robinson Book of the Year and the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction. The Time in Between (M&S 2005) is about a man leaves his home in British Columbia for a return visit to Vietnam, where he fought 29 years earlier, only to disappear there. Bergen also published a collection of short fiction, Sitting Opposite My Brother. His novel, The Retreat, has been scheduled for publication by McClelland & Stewart in 2008. He lives with his family in Winnipeg.
