Having learned how to make Cowichan “Indian” sweaters, Sylvia Olsen operated a Cowichan sweater shop on the Tsartlip Reserve for 16 years. Upon her return to university, she completed her Master’s thesis on Coast Salish knitters and participated in the National Film Board documentary, The Story of the Coast Salish Knitters. Olsen’s picture book Yetsa’s Sweater (Sono Nis $19.95) introduces the sensual art of making the sweaters to younger readers. It is illustrated by Joan Larson who was born in Sexsmith, Alberta but grew up mainly in Victoria. Logan subsequently studied at the Banff Centre, UVic and the the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Her home and studio are in the Qualicum Beach area of Vancouver Island.
