Born in Prince Edward Island in 1914, George Hart's Transcontinental Pedestrians: Canada's First Cross-Country Walk (1906) (Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 2007) provides an account of three Cape Bretoners who attempted to fulfill a dare and a bet by walking across North America and back. Although the adventure failed, one man, John Hugh Gillis, managed to make it from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Vancouver, B.C., making him the first person to walk across Canada from coast to coast.
