Children's book reviewer Deidre Baker, a teacher of English at University of Toronto, has used her summers at Hornby Island as the basis for Becca at Sea (Groundwood 2007), a YA novel about a girl named Becca who visits her grandmother's rustic cabin on a Gulf Island several times during her mother's pregnancy and comes to enjoy her outdoor adventures. Baker is also the co-author of A Guide to Canadian Children's Books with Ken Settington.
