Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, Shirley Vacon served as a youth care worker in the Department of Youth Corrections before becoming a freelance writer. Her first book, Giants of Nova Scotia (Pottersfield Press, 2009), documents the lives of Anna Swan and Angus McAskill, both of whom were afflicted with the rare condition of gigantism in the 19th century. Vacon lives in B.C.
