Lancelot Beavis joined the great clipper ships as a youth. He was captain of the Micronesia, which burned to the waterline off the coast of England, then served on Atlantic cattle carriers, which he despised, did marine survey work on the B.C. coast and trained sailors at Esquimalt in World War I. Beavis ended up operating ferries to West Vancouver before retiring to write his memoirs, Passage from Sail to Steam. The Beavis Islets off the B.C. coast are named for him.
