A naturalist whose talents have included elk bugling, moose calling and wolf howling, Bob Waldon of Alert Bay has turned to safer and easier backyard thrills since resigning from his job at Riding Mountain National Park in 1991. The transplanted Manitoban has followed four guides to feeding winter birds with The Birder's Journal (Whitecap $12.95), a logbook that contains non-technical tips.
"Most Canadians live in suburbs,"; he says. "One way of getting back in touch with reality is to connect with wild creatures of some kind. Feeding birds is a comfortable way of doing this and it's a direct and personal way of contributing something positive to help the environment."; 1-55110-773-2
