Harvest time is near. Grandpa and Grandma are ready to make the scarecrows-but not ordinary scarecrows, as Sarah learns in Constance W. McGeorge's Waltz of the Scarecrows (Raincoast $22.95), illustrated by Mary Whyte.
Their scarecrows wear top-hat-and-tails and a blue satin gown. Once, they tell her, a flock of hungry birds descended to devour their record crops and there was nothing the townspeople could do but leave the harvest ball, dash into the fields and scare the birds with their flapping coats and billowing dresses.
Since then well-dressed scarecrows have kept the crops safe and some nights, they tell Sarah, when the moon is high you can hear the sounds of music and rustling satin in the fields. 0-8118-1727-X
