REALTOR PRODUCES MAP SHOWING GEORGE VANCOUVER'S EXPLORATION OF THE SOUTHWEST COAST OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

SECHELT, BC, CANADA -- May 22, 2007 -- In honour of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the birth of famous northwest explorer Captain George Vancouver, Sunshine Coast real estate agent Gary Little has created an interactive map showing where Vancouver and his crew camped during their 11 day cartographic survey of the southwest coast of British Columbia in June of 1792.

This map, located on the Internet at www.garylittle.ca/van250.html, also includes Vancouver's candid descriptions of the camp sites, many of them not very flattering because of poor weather and inadequate moorage.

During the 400-mile expedition, Vancouver explored Burrard Inlet, Howe Sound, the length of the Sunshine Coast up to Pender Harbour, and Jervis Inlet to the end of Queen's Reach. The survey was conducted from two small boats launched from his flagship Discovery and the armed tender Chatham which were anchored in Birch Bay near Point Roberts.

Vancouver's survey, often regarded as the most arduous ever undertaken by any mariner, provided the raw data needed to create his charts of the northwest coast which were published in 1798. These charts have been widely acclaimed for their detail and accuracy, and were used by mariners well into the 19th century.

George Vancouver was born in King's Lynn in Norfolk, England on June 22, 1757. He is best known for his exploration and survey of the northwest coast of North America from Juan de Fuca Strait to Alaska in 1792, 1793, and 1794. He returned to England in 1795 and died at age 40 in 1798, the same year the book describing his adventure, A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and Round the World, was published.
