The downtown east side is known for its arrests and its arresting books. Having co-edited Hope and Shadows: Stories and Photographs of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (Arsenal), winner of the 2008 City of Vancouver Book Award, Gillian Jerome has produced a follow-up collection of urban 'eclogues'-a fancy word for poetry- entitled Red Nest (Nightwood $17.95). Jerome offers a surreal adventure of inter-connectivity. "When you've been ambushed by gods and stars,"; we're told, "you're catapulted back into a wild sprawling city filled with cordless phones, coyotes and the hairdos of dandelions.";
