BC authors Kim La Fave and Gary Kent have been shortlisted for a Joe Shuster Award for their children's book, Fishing with Gubby ($19.95, Harbour Publishing). Their book has been nominated in the Comics for Kids category, which recognizes works which capture the attention and fascination of young readers, and help to create a passion for life-long reading. Works considered for this award are comic books and graphic novels by Canadian creators that are targeted at readers 14 and under.
Fishing with Gubby follows Gubby, a salmon fisherman, and his cat Puss, as they travel up BC's west coast, through Georgia Strait, north past Port Hardy and through Johnstone and Queen Charlotte Straits to the destination of Quatsino Sound, where they settle in for a summer of fishing. Gubby and Puss face roaring rapids, rough and tumble storms, banks of fog, a pod of orcas and a tussle with a basking shark, all while trolling for spring and coho salmon and visiting other fishermen and homesteaders along the way. Marvellously illustrated in full colour, Fishing with Gubby makes the wharfs, boats, fishermen and villages of the BC coast come alive with remarkable detail and humour.

Kim La Fave, a Governor General's Award-winning artist, is the illustrator of Amos's Sweater (by Janet Lunn)--winner of the Ruth Schwartz Children's Book Award and the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award for illustration--Follow That Star (by Kenneth Oppel), the bestselling The Bones Book and Skeleton (by Stephen Cumbaa) and many other children's books. He lives in Roberts Creek, BC.
