Stationed on naval bases in Halifax and British Columbia for 12 years, Braithwaite experienced and witnessed racism and later dealt with issues of cross-cultural identity in Wigger (Arsenal Pulp, 1995), a story of urban gay black youths set over a period of 24 hours.
