Horace Briggs was a well-known American educator who taught classical languages. He became the principal of the Buffalo Classical School, an elite school established to prepare boys for college. Briggs travelled extensively, recording his journeys in a series of articles. He sailed by steamer to Alaska and passed through Vancouver upon his return, as described in Letters from Alaska and the Pacific Coast (Buffalo: E.H. Hutchinson, 1889).
