An SFU professor emeritus of linguistics, he is one of the world's most distinguished historians of linguistics. Twenty years in the making, his A Census Of Medieval Latin Grammatical Manuscripts has become a scholar's guide to the material sources of medieval grammar. He was named head of SFU's department of languages, linguistics and literature when SFU opened in 1965.
