Born February 22, 1951 in Toronto, Ric Careless, an eighth-generation Canadian, moved to Victoria in 1968. He is the first non-American to be awarded the Outstanding River Conservationist award. He wrote To Save the Wild Earth (Raincoast, 1997) a firsthand account of the growth of B.C.'s environmental movement, and he co-wrote Tatshensini River Wild (Western Canadian Wilderness Committee / Raincoast Books, 1993) with Ken Budd. For more than 30 years he coordinated wilderness preservation campaigns, having played a leading role in the protection of more than seven million acres of wilderness as the co-founder of the Sierra Club in British Columbia and the executive director of BC Spaces for Nature.
