Winner of an award of merit from the B.C. Historical Federation, he was deemed one of five writers who contributed the most in 1988 toward historical writing in B.C. with his book Ties to Water: The History of Bull River in the East Kootenay (Published by the Author, Fort Steele, B.C. 1988). He died on November 24, 1990. There is a scholarship in his name at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook. Ties to Water was reissued in 1998 support of the Verdun Casselman Scholarship Fund in Cranbrook.
