As part of an effort to write the history of Canada within the Makers of Canada series consisting of 21 biographies, provincial librarian R.E. Gosnell and R.H. Coats co-wrote volume 20 in the series, Sir James Douglas (Toronto: Morang & Co., 1908). Ostensibly a biography, it was mainly a history of Vancouver Island and British Columbia prior to Confederation. Born in 1874, Robert Hamilton Coats was a journalist and a statistician for the Dominion of Canada, then with the League of Nations. He also taught at the University of Toronto.
