Before renowned carver Chief Lelooska died in September of 1996, photograper Douglas Congdon-Martin produced one of his many titles that document the techniques of craftsmanship with Lelooska: Traditional Art of the Mask, Carving a Transformation Mask (Atglen, Pennsylvania: Schiffer Publishing, 1996; 2003). Although Lelooska died in Washington State, his masks reflect the values and stories of the Kwagiulth on both sides of the border. Lelooska and his family were adopted into the House of Sewide of the Mamaleleqala and Qwiqwasutnox bands of the Kwakwaka'wakw by Chief James Aul Sewide. The Lelooska Foundation is based in Ariel, Washington, northeast of Portland. Lelooska means "He Who Cuts Against Wood with a Knife."
