Having retired from the University of Victoria as director of the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society, Coward became a specialist on ethics and biotechnology for the Genome BC Board of Directors. With UVic's Andrew J. Weaver he co-edited Hard Choices: Climate Change in Canada (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2004), written for the general reader. Attention is given to Canada's response to the Kyoto Protocol and an assessment of the adequacy of the Kyoto guidelines. Coward contributed the chapter called 'What Can Individuals Do?'
