Hariot Georgina Rowan-Hamilton, born in 1843, married a distant cousin, Frederick Hamilton Temple Blackwood, First Marquis of Dufferin and Ava in1862. Lady Dufferin built a reputation as a quintessential diplomat's wife. When she died in 1936, she left behind a legacy of good deeds, including the establishment of training programs for nurses and midwives, and hospitals exclusively for women and children throughout British India.
In 1876 Lady Dufferin visited British Columbia with Lord Dufferin, Governor General of Canada. Her impressions of Canada are contained in My Canadian Journal 1972-'78: Extracts From My Letters Home Written While Lord Dufferin Was Governor-General (New York: A. Appleton, 1891).
