Raised on a southern Ontario dairy farm, Janice Elmhirst received her B.Sc. from the University of Guelph in 1982 and a Ph.D. in Botany (Plant Pathology) from the University of Toronto in 1988. After more than a decade of research work in Ontario and B.C. for Integrated Pest Management, during which she headed the BC Provincial Pest Diagnostic Laboratory for four years, she started her own company in 2002, Elmhirst Diagnostics & Research, based in Abbotsford, in order to provide consulting services to the ornamental nursery industry. With entomology instructor Ken Fry and agroforester Douglas Macaulay she co-wrote Garden Bugs of British Columbia: Gardening to Attract, Repel and Control (Lone Pine, $21.95). It features 126 species of insect most commonly encountered in B.C. gardens. 978-1-55105-591-6
