John Wilson Foster has taught Irish and British literature at UBC since 1974. He won the 1992 American Conference For Irish Studies Book Prize For Literary Criticism for his collection of essays, Colonial Consequences: Essays in Irish Literature and Culture. In his follow-up study, The Titanic Complex: A Cultural Manifest, Foster studies the folklore, art, drama, songs and poems inspired by the Titanic disaster. He also looks at how the construction and loss of the ship fits into the industrial and socio-political culture of east Belfast.
