Born in 1923, while his parents were living in the Canadian Western Lumber Company townsite at Fraser Mills, B.C., Steve Gatenbury of Tsawwassen lived in the Queensborough neighborhood of New Westminster from 1924 to 1942. It's an area on the northeastern end of Lulu Island, about a half mile wide and two miles long. He self-published his memories in Queensborough: Images of an Old Neighborhood (Sedge Publishing 1991). Previously he produced a memoir of his professional career, Once to Learn It: A Lighthearted Account of a Fifty Year Adventure in the B.C. Lumber Industry (Sedge Publishing 1989). He started to work in the sawmill industry in 1939 at age 16. He sold a remanufacturing business in 1989 and retired.
