Before he started teaching a course at UBC on freelance food and travel writing, Don Genova earned a Masters of Food Culture at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Parma, Italy from 2006-2007. Ten years earlier he had begun to operate as a freelance journalist in Canada, having started his career at a 5,000-watt private radio station in Terrace in 1983. He has contributed to CBC, The Food Network, NPR, Globe & Mail, BC Business, Northwest Palate and Western Living. He writes a blog about sustainable food on Vancouver Island, giving rise to his first book, Food Artisans of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands (Touchwood 2014), a guide of the food producers also derived from his CBC Radio Victoria's weekly column "Food Matters."
