Director of the Institute for European Studies at UBC, Sima Godfrey is a specialist in 19th-century French literature and cultural history. She has written on Balzac, Flaubert, Mallarme and Baudelaire. She contributed the entry on Baudelaire in the new Oxford Encyclopaedia of Aesthetics (1998). Her review essay of the work of French cultural historian, Alain Corbin, appeared in French Historical Studies (2002). Godfrey co-edited The Shifting Foundations of Modern Nation-States: Realignments of Belonging (UTP, 2004) with UBC's Frank Unger. The study examines such trends as assimilation in Western Europe and separatism in southeastern Europe.
