In the year following 10-year-old Renee Smith's tragic and controversial death in Alert Bay due to an undiagnosed ruptured appendix, W.G. Goldthorpe convened a commission that provided 30 recommendations to improve health and health care services among ten Nimpkish bands in Report to the Minister, Indian Health and Health Care: Alert Bay, B.C. (Ottawa: Health and Welfare, 1980). Dara Culhane-Speck probed the same situation in An Error in Judgement (Talonbooks, 1987).
