Born in Toronto in 1938, photographer Dorothy Haegert came to Victoria in 1945 and later studied at the Vancouver School of Art, Banff School of Fine Arts and UBC. She spent five years preparing Children of the First People, a 1979 B.C. Provincial Museum exhibit that served as the basis for a 1983 book of the same name from Randy Fred's Tillicum Library initiative. The book of photography was reissued in 1990 with memoirs from ten Aboriginal elders: Helen Alphonse (born in Koksilah), Alex Amos (born in Hesquiat in 1898), Francis Charlie (born at Ahouset in 1910), Ruth Cook (born at Charles Creek in 1931), Dave Elliott (born at Tsartlip in 1910), Stan James (born in Nanaimo in 1911), George Louis (born in Sidney Inlet in 1912), Dorothy Sanvidge (born in Nootka Sound in 1925), John Thomas (born in Clo-oose in 1913) and Peter Webster (born in Bedwell River in 1908).
