Born in Winnipeg on April 3, 1960, Tom Hawthorn moved to Vancouver from Montreal in 1977 to attend the University of B.C. He joined the Ubyssey student newspaper in his second day on campus, becoming co-editor with Heather Conn in 1979. A newspaper and magazine reporter who now lives in Victoria, for several years Hawthorn wrote a weekly human-interest column for the Globe and Mail. He contributes to TheTyee.ca and a wide variety of newspapers and magazines. His articles have been translated into several languages, including Finnish and Korean. His radio documentaries have been aired on CBC Radio's "The World This Weekend," "The Inside Track" and "On the Island."

He contributed 30,000 words to the sports encyclopedia Total Tennis (Sport Classic Books, 2003), and contributed to The Greater Vancouver Book (Linkman Press, 1997). Hawthorn's articles have appeared in The Way It Looks from Here: Contemporary Canadian Writing on Sports (Knopf, 2004), an anthology edited by Stephen Brunt; Best Canadian Essays, 1989, edited by Douglas Fetherling (Fifth House, 1989); The Sporting News' Best Sports Stories, 1990 Edition, edited by Dave Sloan (The Sporting News Publishing Co., 1990); and Canadian Content (2d edition), edited by Sarah Norton and Nell Waldman (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1992). His work has also appeared in two baseball anthologies - Dominionball: Baseball Above the 49th, edited by Jane Finnan Dorward (Society for American Baseball Research, 2005), and Rain Check: Baseball in the Pacific Northwest (SABR, 2006).

Also, Hawthorn's work has been featured in more than a dozen anthologies published by the Society for American Baseball Research. He joined the staff of Munro's Books in Victoria in 2015.
