In the same year she entered the MFA program of UBC's Creative Writing Program, Alberta-raised Betty Jane Hegerat published her first novel, Running Toward Home (NeWest Press, 2006), about a 12-year-old girl with a habit of running away. It was followed by a collection of short stories, A Crack in the Wall (Oolichan 2008), mainly stories about coping with loss and setbacks in contemporary urban society. In the title story, death fractures a perfect home. Hegerat has worked as a social worker and teacher.
