He countered conventional wisdom in the 1970s by correctly predicting that South Africa would officially abandon its racist policies. The co-author, with Kogila Moodley, of The Opening of the Apartheid Mind: Options for the New South Africa claims that the conflict in South Africa originated along economic, not racial lines. The SFU sociologist says South African violence has been mainly caused by "enormous unemployment among alienated youth and unskilled migrant workers." In 1997 He completed Comrades in Business, a critical analysis of post-apartheid politics. His other books, also co-authored with Kogila Moodley, include Modernizing Racial Domination (California, 1971) and South Africa Without Apartheid (California, 1986).
