Shirley Hewett writes sailing articles and she's an authority on the Swiftsure yacht race. With Humphrey Golby she co-wrote Swiftsure: The First Fifty Years (Victoria: Lightship Press Limited, 1980) about the Swiftsure sailing race. She has since recalled the history of the HMCS Oriole in The People's Boat (Heritage, 2002), an illustrated book that highlights the yacht's first overall victory in the Victoria to Maui Yacht Race in 2000, which capped the 50-year career of the Royal Canadian Navy ship. Launched in 1921 as Oriole IV, for 20 years the vessel was the prized possession of Commodore George H. Gooderham of Toronto's Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Oriole then served as a training vessel for sea cadets. In 1954, she sailed via the Panama Canal from Halifax to Esquimalt, B.C. Oriole. The Oriole played host ship to some 30 vessels visiting Victoria and Port Alberni during the Tall Ships 2005.
