Born in southwest England near the Welsh border, Alan Hill of New Westminster left home at age sixteen and gained his Masters degree in International Development at the University of Leeds. He immigrated to Canada in 2005. He started writing poetry while working for a non-profit agency in northern Botswana in 2001.

From 2017 - 2020, Alan Hill served as the Poet Laureate of the City of New Westminster and he is a former president of the Royal City Literary Arts Society (RCLAS).

He has published in CV2, Canadian Literature, Vancouver Review, Antigonish Review, Sub-Terrain, Poetry Is Dead, Quills, Cascadia Review and in a number of anthologies, as well as in the United Kingdom in South, The Wolf, Brittle Star and Turbulence.
