As a University of Victoria instructor and author of Jacob Burckhardt and the Crisis of Modernity (McGill-Queens, 2000), Malaspina College's John R. Hinde received the 2001 Wallace K. Ferguson Prize from the Canadian Historical Association. He illuminates the origins of the Great Strike of 1912-1914 in When Coal Was King: Ladysmith and the Coal-Mining Industry on Vancouver Island (UBC Press, 2003) for which he received an Honourable Mention in the annual historical writing competition of the B.C. Historical Federation.
