A founding director of the Institute for Critical Heritage and Tourism, social scientist Richard M. Hutchings wrote, Maritime Heritage in Crisis: Indigenous Landscapes and Global Ecological Breakdown (Routledge, 2017). The book explores the causes and consequences of the recent destruction of Indigenous heritage sites near ocean environments. Everything from coastal development and continued population growth to climate change is examined. Born and raised in Seattle, WA, Hutchings has worked across much of the North American West including British Columbia. He earned his PhD from UBC.
