Pacific Northwest material used by anthropologist Dell Hymes for his examination of "enthnopoetics"; in his "In vain I tried to tell you"; (1981) is primarily derived from Swanton's Haida Songs and four songs from Boas' Ethnology of the Kwakiutl. This is an exploration of stylistic and linguistic devices and patterns in oral tales. Hymes is professor emeritus of anthropology and English at the University of Virginia. He is the author of many books, including Now I Know Only So Far: Essays in Ethnopoetics (Nebraska 2003). He received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1955. "The justification for the existence of anthropology,"; he says, "is to find out about the world, not produce third-rate philosophers.";
