Kwantlen storyteller Joseph Dandurand’s The Sasquatch, The Fire and the Cedar Baskets is illustrated by Simon Daniel James from the Mamalilikulla/Kwicksutaineuk clans of the Kwakwaka’wakw nation. The story is about a sasquatch who saves his family by dousing a forest fire with rainwater collected in thousands of cedar baskets woven by his partner. James began to draw in elementary school and to carve wood at the age of fifteen. James has co-created “Raven Tales,” a television show that introduces Indigenous stories to young audiences through CGI animation. Born in Alert Bay, James illustrated his first children’s book while living on Bowen Island.
