Born on November 25, 1930 in Tetschen, Bohemia, Wolfgang George Jilek moved to Montreal in 1963 and later to Chilliwack in 1966. Trained in various countries throughout the world, he had gained degrees in Medicine, Social Psychiatry and Anthropology. He studied the modern Guardian Spirit dance of the Coast Salish and published Salish Indian Mental Health and Culture Change: Psychohygienic and Therapeutic Aspects of the Guardian Spirit Ceremonial (1974). It was followed by Indian Healing: Shamanic Ceremonialism in the Pacific Northwest Today (1982). His enduring marriage to his fellow psychiatrist Dr. Louise Jilek-Aall is described in the biography Moon Madness by Alan Twigg. He died after a prolonged illness  in mid-January of 2021.
