Ian Kennedy became a connoisseur of pubs while studying at Queens University in Belfast. He broadened his knowledge during travels to Britain, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean and North America, and drew on this background while co-writing A Guide to Neighbourhood Pubs in Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Squamish, Whistler and The Sunshine Coast (1983) and The Pick of the Neighbourhood Pubs (1986). He subsequently self-published Sunny Sandy Savary: A History of Savary Island 1792-1992 (1992). He first visited Savary Island in 1980. He was born in County Donegal, Ireland in 1943 and came to Canada in 1954. He gained a B.A. from UBC and later studied in Belfast. An avid rugby player, he wrote his history of Savary Island while recovering from a bout of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

In Tofino and Clayoquot Sound: A History (Harbour $36.95) Kennedy, with Margaret Horsfield, explores the rich heritage and captivating past of the Vancouver Island regions of Clayoquot Sound and Tofino. Starting with the dramatic geological upheavals of nature, Kennedy delves into the people, events and industries that shaped the area.
