Renowned bandleader Mart Kenney was born in Tweed, Ontario on March 7, 1910 and came to B.C. as an infant. First learning the saxophone, he formed a dance band at age 21 that evolved into Mart Kenney and his Western Gentlemen. His weekly radio program entitlted Sweet and Low was broadcast until 1942. He played for Canadian troops during the war. His band was headquartered at Woodbridge, Ontario from 1949 to 1969. He was inducted into the Order of Canada in 1980 but continued to perform into old age. His most famous song was The West, A Nest And You. His memoirs are included in Mart Kenney and his Western Gentlemen (Western Prairie Producer Prairie Books, 1981).
