Co-authored with Dr. Gordon McFarlane the field guide: Sharks, Skates, Rays and Chimeras of British Columbia (Royal BC Museum $24.95). Despite wide-spread fear of sharks driven by sensationalist movies and media reports, most of B.C.'s species (as well as other sharks around the world) are cautious and placid. Many sharks live in waters where they are unlikely to have human contact. This book goes a long way to presenting these chondrichthyans as important creatures of the pacific northwest coastal waters, "worthy of respect, study, admiration and protection."

Dr. Jackie King is a research scientist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the Pacific Biological Station where she leads the Canadian Pacific Shark Research Program.
