Born on a Doukhobor farm in Saskatchewan in 1935, Jon-Lee Kootnekoff grew up in Mission. As a former Canadian Olympian who converted to Catholicism, he coached the SFU Clansmen basketball team to considerable success from 1965 to 1971 until he collapsed from exhaustion. His subsequent 'self-discovery through the games of life' led to his inspirational autobiography about competition, spirituality and psychology, From Kooty with Love: Self-Discovery Through the Games of Life (Horizon Positive Self-Image Institute, 1990) -- a New Age coaching book.
