Joel Martineau was born in Campbell River, BC, in 1948. He earned a PhD from UBC in 2001. His dissertation explores writing about Haida Gwaii from "first contact" in 1774 through recent ecotourism. He taught writing and literature in the Department of English at UBC until retirement in 2010. He lives in Vancouver with Junko Noguchi and their daughters Michelle Tamaka and Chantal Ayaha.
