Neil McDaniel received a degree in marine zoology from UBC in 1971. His career includes eight years with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and another seven as editor of Canada's DIVER Magazine. For the past 30 years he has been a freelance photographer and cinematographer, contributing articles to international wildlife magazines and books and shooting film and video for features, television series and documentaries. Currently based in Vancouver, he continues to pursue his interests in photojournalism, high-definition cinematography, video production and biological consulting.

A Field Guide to Sea Stars of the Pacific Northwest (Harbour, 2011) is McDaniel's guide to 2,000 species of echinoderms from northern California to southeast Alaska.
