The essential importance of Pacific wild salmon to indigenous peoples of the North Pacific is examined in First Fish, First People: Salmon Tales of the North Pacific Rim (1998) edited by Judith Roche and Meg McHutchison. Along with the Okanagan and Coast Salish of British Columbia, this study incorporates the Ainu of Japan, the Ulchi and Nyvkh from Siberia, and the Makah, Warm Springs and Spokane in the United States. Roche has worked as a Literary Arts Director for Bumbershoot in Seattle; Hutchinson has been a project director for One Reel and editor of a literary arts magazine in the Pacific Northwest.
