Set in pre-colonial Vancouver Island during the Hudson's Bay Company administration of James Douglas, Mel McIlveen's Treachery and Treason was inspired by the exploits of Victor Jacobson, a West Coast sealer who was based in Victoria. This historical novel is both a love story and a tale of rivalry between two 'sea dogs' played out on the sealing grounds of the Pacific North West. Victor Jacobson's house, built in West Bay in 1893, complete with lookout tower and fish scalloped siding, is still in use as a private residence, located at 507 Head Street, in Victoria.
