Ally McKay was born in California and raised in Oregon. She was educated at Arizona State University (BA, 1972) and McGill University in Montreal (MA, 1976, PhD, 81). She lives in Victoria, B.C.

Many of the stories in her collection Human Bones were previously published in Canadian literary magazines, including The University of Windsor Review, event, Quarry, NeWest, and Grain, and in the anthology of short fiction from the Banff Centre for the Arts, Meltwater.
