It's possible that McLennan was the first British Columbian to publish a novel. She was born in Maine on January 26, 1841 and she died in Vancouver on June 30, 1927. She published a novel called Love's Divine Alchemy (Montreal, 1893). It's possible she also wrote a title called Snatched From Neptune's Bosom, but no surviving copies have been found. According to researcher Margaret Waddington, Emily Augusta was a public school teacher named Mrs. Ward before she married John McLennan on July 1, 1879. She taught at Trenant Public in the Ladner area in 1878.
