Heather McLeod, as the co-owner of Makaria Farm in the Cowichan Valley, became a co-founder of the successful community grain-growing project, Island Grains. She is also the founder of Renaissance Women, a group dedicated to personal empowerment through relearning basic skills. Her writing has been published in Small Farm Canada, The New Quarterly, The Dalhousie Review and Room (of One's Own). McLeod also writes a farming column for The Winnipeg Review.

This work led to the publication of her first book, Uprisings A Hands-On Guide to the Community Grain Revolution (New Society, 2013), co-written with Cowichan Valley reporter Sarah Simpson. To aid community self-sufficiency, their book describes ten community models to demonstrate how local grain production can be achieved, providing step-by-step instructions for small-scale production.
